DIG an archaeological adventure
Grab a trowel and dig to see what you can find in DIG's specially designed excavation pits. Rediscover some of the amazing finds that the archaeologists have uncovered under the streets of York. Understand how these finds explain how people lived in Roman, Medieval, Viking and Victorian times. Touch real artefacts and work out what they would have been used for. | Do you have a favourite toy or treasure you can tell us the story of? Children are invited to bring along a special object and describe its history and write a finds label, just like archaeologists. Children are welcome to leave their objects for selection for our special exhibition running throughout September. There will also be a chance to see some objects from Victorian York that would have been part of a Victorian childhood. | Artefacts and Exploding Bugs: The Big Draw 2009 - October 24th, 11 - 4pm : Come and explore the world of micro -fauna and explode it into a giant work of art.
The Ghost Hunt of York
The Ghost Hunt of York offers an evening walking tour of York`s haunted locations, it lasts approximately an hour and a quarter. Whatever the weather and always on time, the Victorian guide with his frock coat, top hat and Gladstone bag manifests himself at the strike of half past seven at the bottom of Shambles, England's most famous mediaeval street.
Clifford's Tower
Clifford’s Tower is a must-see site for visitors to York, offering the best 360 degree views over the historic city from the ramparts walk. Named after Roger De Clifford, whose body was left to hang from the walls, Clifford’s Tower has a colourful history. The former keep of York Castle, the existing stone Tower was constructed in the 13th century and operated as weapons store, strongroom and even prison until its roof was blown off in an accident in 1684. For a ruin that has no roof, it is little wonder that 2009 is set to be the year of outdoor exploration at Rievaulx Abbey! With trails planned to help visitors spot signs of the wildlife that takes over the site once the doors are closed to the public, new cycle racks and cycling trails encouraging visitors to explore the countryside around Rievaulx Abbey, and even wildlife podcasts to download, visitors will be invited to look at Rievaulx’s wild side and discover the life that still fills this magnificent ruin!
